Bertha transitioned from this life into Gods presence on July 23, 2025.
Bertha was the 7th of 8 children borne to Maimie and Clabe Motley. She was 93 years old.
Bertha accepted Christ at an early age. She attended Autaugaville Training School, graduating in 1951. After graduation, Bertha migrated to Detroit to join her sisters, Mary and Eloise.
In June, 1959 Bertha married James Thompson and the couple welcomed a daughter, Valda Lynn.
Bertha was a stay- at- home mom during her daughter’s early years but in the early 70’s she decided that it was time to pursue her own career dreams. She became a certified Montessori teacher of 3 and 4 year olds at St. Brigid School in Detroit. Bertha took great pleasure in having an influence in molding young minds. By the mid 1970’s Bertha became a dietary aide at Sinai Hospital in Detroit. She was over the moon excited when the hospital offered to send her to New York to learn cake decorating. She decorated cakes and desserts for special events at the hospital until her retirement in 1993.
After retirement, Bertha hung up her apron to care for her two grandsons whom she loved dearly. She also loved to travel and cruises were her favorite.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband James, her parents and her 7 siblings.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Valda Chambers; grandsons Kevin Chambers II (Brittany) and Brandyn Chambers; great grandsons Tyler, Brody and Brandyn II; four nieces, Eurrie Lowe, Bernadette Carter, Angela Motley and Argene Carswell; a nephew Donald Carswell and a great nephew, Kevin Carter.
