Audrey Brown was born in Detroit, MI, on December 30, 1927, to parents Eddie Scott and Thelma Johnson.
She was educated in the Detroit Public School system and graduated from Northeastern High School in 1945. She went on to complete 2 years of college.
Audrey attended Bethel AME in her youth, but truly gave her life to the Lord later in life and became a member of Trinity Deliverance Church, where she served under the leadership of the late Apostle V. Benjamin Washington, and Apostle Diane Washington. She served as a member of the Usher Board and as a Church Mother. “Mother Brown”, as she was affectionately called, loved the Lord and her church family. She was always there with her beautiful smile ready to lend a helping hand where needed.
Audrey married Charles Edward Brown on June 30, 1957 and had four children: Edward, twins Mable and Martin, and Thelma.
Audrey had many interesting jobs. Her very first one was working at a lamp shade factory. She laughingly shared how she was fired on her first day because she was told to clean the toilet and she wouldn’t do it! She also worked as an elevator operator at the Internal Revenue Service in Downtown Detroit. In the late 1950’s, she started work at the U. S. Army Tank Automotive Command Unit in Warren, MI. She worked there for 30 years, with many job titles, including a typist in the Motor Pool, a supply technician, and lastly, as a logistics clerk in Research and Development, until her retirement in June of 1989.
Before she was married and had a family, Audrey dreamed of being a fashion designer. She drew wonderful sketches of beautiful flowing gowns. As a young woman, she would design and make clothes for fashion shows. She was an excellent seamstress. She made everything from slipcovers to wedding dresses. She often made her own patterns and created the most beautiful garments. Audrey loved to knit and crochet as well. She created hats, scarves, sweaters, coats, dresses, blankets, the list goes on. Many of her family and friends benefited from these talents and, thankfully, she passed her love for these crafts on to her daughters and granddaughters.
Audrey was also an avid bowler for many years. She was a member of several bowling leagues. She used a 16 pound ball, and threw a mean curve. She collected many bowling trophies through the years. Later in life, she enjoyed bowling on the Nintendo Wii, where she also had a mean curve!
Mother Audrey Brown was a fun, loving, outgoing individual who had many talents and enjoyed life. She never complained, but always strived to make things better. She loved her family and friends and will be greatly missed by many.
Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles Brown, her brother, Irman Johnson, close cousins Irving Gratz, Milton Gratz, and Lorraine Smith.
She leaves to cherish her memory nephew Irving Jimmerson; children Edward (Tenia) Brown, Mable (Gene) Townsend, Martin Brown, and Thelma Brown; Grandchildren Simone (Marcus) McKinney, Corinthia Townsend, Joshua Townsend, Anna Townsend and Andrew Townsend; Great grandchildren MJ McKinney, Shafer McKinney, Sloane McKinney, Shiloh McKinney, and a host of family and friends.
