Obituary for Dr. Lucius Bernard Calloway D.D.S.

An Artist Who Created Smiles

Lucius Bernard Calloway, D.D.S. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 13, 1923. He was the youngest son of Grady and Ozella Calloway, and twin brother to Lucille. While he was still a toddler, the family settled in Detroit, where his father worked at the Kroger bakery for many years.

Following high school at Northwestern, L.B. returned to the South to continue his education at Fisk University in Nashville. During the summers, he sold sandwiches on the trains and shined shoes to pay for his dental school tuition, and was also awarded a scholarship. L.B. attended Meharry Medical College in Nashville, and became a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1951.

After graduation, L.B. returned to Detroit and met Martina Marvel Mouton, a brilliant and beautiful teacher from Lafayette, Louisiana. In addition to broad intelligence and respect for education, they shared a great love for the arts, especially music. L.B. and Martina were married in 1952 and had four children: Jan, Lori, Christopher, and John. L.B. spared no effort to provide the best for his children. They are eternally grateful, and honor his legacy.

Dr. Calloway maintained a stellar reputation for professional excellence and compassion throughout his 50-year career as a dental professional. He mentored several outstanding dentists, and was committed to the underserved citizens of Detroit who needed him. It pleased and humbled him when generations of families entrusted him with their dental care. The transformed and happy smiles of his loyal patients are a living tribute to his expertise.

LB.’s energy, work ethic, generosity and kindness blessed us all. His combination of science, creativity, artistic temperament and humor was unique, and forged a connection with people which will never be broken. We release him to eternal life with love and thanks, knowing that his example and light will remain with us forever.
