Carolyn Delores Captain was born August 14, 1943, in Montgomery, Alabama, to Robert
and Catherine Captain. Three children were born to this union. Robert (Junior), Carolyn
Delores and Jacqueline Delphine. Robert Jr. preceded her in death.
Carolyn attended St. Elizabeth and Sacred Heart Catholic schools. She was a proud
Catholic and was confirmed as a child in the Catholic faith. She was brilliant in
school and often helped her brother with his homework.
Carolyn had one son, Mark Vincent Pacelli (named after a priest). Who also preceded
her in death.
Carolyn graduated from Northwestern High School. In 1963, she married the love of her
life, Samuel Eugene Horne. The marriage ended in divorce; however, they both loved
each other until the end.
Carolyn worked for the VA hospital for 3 years later transferring within the federal
government to the United States Postal Service. She worked as a letter carrier, and
many of her co-workers were impressed with the appearance of her work uniform
every day. It was always starched to the 9s. Many people asked her,
“How do you keep your uniform so neat every day? and she said, “It’s called Starch and an Iron.”
Her work ethic was impeccable and was admired by many because whatever she did,
she was good at it. Her boss also noticed and told her to apply for the supervisor
position by mail and letter Carriers. Carolyn's boss also recommended
that she apply for the new advanced position.
Carolyn retired after 31 years of service. She enjoyed and loved the people she worked
with. As a supervisor, she always told them we work together and we are a team. She
often told her staff if the floor was clean (meaning all the mail was sorted and delivered)
I will get the entire staff whatever you want to eat. Every day, she often said,” You do not
work for me; we work as a team.” Shortly after she retired, her co-workers surprised her
with a first-class retirement party at the Bonnie Brook Country Club. She received
numerous awards and accolades, gifts, and trips from her staff. At her retirement party,
people were crying because they did not want her to retire, and many people
said they were going to miss her. One Co-worker said, “She really took care of us.”
Carolyn loved the Detroit Lions, playing cards, and going to the Casino. She watched the
Lions every Sunday, win or lose. She has been a fan and watching since the 1950s.
She also loved to talk to Cousins Johnny and his son John about the Lions and the
Cowboys or football in general. Carolyn adopted a quote from our beloved GreatGrandmother,
“Mama Cilla”. She told Carolyn, “You always root for the home team.” Carolyn said it all the time
after that. Carolyn loved her family, and family meant everything to her. She was honest and never
hesitated to speak her mind. Family was her greatest joy, and she treasured every
moment with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed all the get-togethers during
the holidays.
Carolyn is celebrated today and is survived by Tiffany, Marcus, and Kayla. She is also
celebrated by her Sister, Jacqueline (Donald), Nephew Robert III (Stephanie), and her Nieces
Krystal (Lee), Kathleen, Nephew Jordan, Great Niece Amber, Great Nephew
Christopher and best friend Joyce Holmes, and a host of her beloved Cousins and
friends.
Carolyn wrote on March 22, 2014, at her request to include this statement at the end of
her obituary.
“ I don’t want anyone to write anything.”
