Obituary for
Steven J. Coble
A living symbol of love, Steven Judson Coble was born on February 14, 1988 to Cynthia and Gregory Coble in Cleveland, Ohio.
Named after his paternal great grandfather, Steve Christian and his maternal great grandfather, William Judson King, Steven exhibited charisma, intellect, and energy early in his life. As a third grader, Steven was acknowledged for scoring above 12th grade on his state standardized examination. He was introduced to the Academic Games Program in the third grade and remained an active, successful competitor through twelfth grade. Academic Games provided a safe, intellectually stimulating environment that met Steven’s desire to be competitive, socialize with his peers, and meet students from all over the eastern regions of the United States.
Steven transferred from Bagley Elementary to Bates Academy in the fifth grade where he met Isiah Thomas White, his best friend for the rest of his life. While on one of numerous visits to historically black colleges with his family, Steven visited Hampton University. As he sat on the grass facing the bay, the seventh grader declared, “This is where I’m going to college.”
Entering Cass Technical High School, Steven joined JROTC. He left home at 6:00 a.m. many mornings to participate in morning drill exercises. Steven thoroughly enjoyed his years at Cass Tech, establishing many strong friendships and experiencing great achievements. He graduated with a 3.89 GPA.
Steven and his pal Isiah, entered Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia together as freshmen. Although he was offered a full scholarship with the Naval ROTC at Hampton University, he pursued and secured a scholarship with Army ROTC. Steven and his friend Isiah enjoyed the Hampton experience as they studied Architecture at their “Home by the Sea”. He experienced many accomplishments during those years including earning his Masters Degree in Architecture, being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army, and joining Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, New Port News, Virginia.
After returning to Detroit, Steven spent this summer visiting family and close friends and serving in various roles at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Southfield, Michigan. He was found unresponsive, Tuesday, September 10, 2013 in Officer’s Lodgings at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.
Such an energetic, loving, outstanding personality, Steven touched so many lives. He was always compelled to support others. Some thoughts shared by his friends about him are:
“Definitely a one of a kind personality that could brighten anyone's day no matter what they were going through!!!! “; “He was so sweet and did all he could for those he loves and those he didn't know!”; “…always a man of your word optimistic, infectious & humorous person…”; “Never complained, never too tired...just bouncing around being Steven.”; “You were always a peaceful person…”; “…wicked smart.”
