Bernice was born January 16, 1928 to the union of George and Birdie Fields in Dallas, Texas.
She received her education in the Richardson Texas Public School System near Dallas, Texas.
Bernice was baptized at an early age. She met and married Thornton Dawson in Dallas, Texas and to this union 10 children, Shirley, Johnnie, Thornton, George Ray, Carmellia, Lucky, Bernice, Clinton, Thoretta Elaine and Evelyn were born.
After moving to Detroit, Michigan with her family, she became a member of the Cameron Avenue Church of Christ under the leadership of Bro. A. C. Holt, Bro. Alex Davenport, and later her son Bro. Lucky Dawson where she remained faithful until her health declined.
Bernice was a stay-at-home mom, and caregiver to young and old, including the family of Linda Tanksley for several years. She was a very faithful and active member of the Cameron Avenue Church of Christ where she was the head of the Kitchen Ministries, very active in the Sick and Shut-in Ministry, and nurtured and counseled many family, friends and members of the church.
God called Bernice peacefully home on May 18, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, five brothers, James, Thomas, George, Emory and Herman, three sisters, Audra, Geraldine and Birdie, three son-in-laws, Edsel Thornhill, Gregory Moore and Wilford Agee, and one daughter-in-law, Jacquelyn Dawson.
Bernice leaves to cherish her memory 4 sons, Thornton (wife Laura) Dawson, George Ray (wife Sheri) Dawson, Lucky Dawson, Clinton Dawson; 6 daughters, Shirley Thornhill, Johnnie Moore, Carmellia (husband Craig) Smith, Bernice (husband Willie) Coats, Thoretta Elaine (husband Dwane) Blackmon, and Evelyn Dawson; 1 brother, Samuel (wife Mae) Fields of Austin, Texas; a very special nephew H.J. (wife Ella) Jones; 17 grandchildren, Roschelle (David), Alesia, Winnoma, Tamaqua (Nick), Gregory A. Moore (Tammy), LaRena, Dana, Rigel (Qiana), Brandy (Morris), Thomas (Sabrina), Lattice (Cleo), Chelsea (Colton), Christa, Ricky Bernard, Clinton Jr., Micah (Kimberly), and Chantel (Reginald); 24 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives friends, and church family.
