Dorothy May Smith

December 31, 1929 — November 17, 2022

Dorothy May Smith was born December 31, 1929, in Lynchburg, VA.  She was one of four children born to the union of Robert and Myrtle Mundy. Dorothy accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age.

The Mundy family moved to Detroit, MI in 1944.  Dorothy attended Detroit Public Schools graduating from Northwestern High School in 1948.  Dorothy worked in the medical field and eventually continued her education at the Mount Carmel Mercy Hospital and Medical Center where she became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1976.

Dorothy’s first marriage to Eugene Brookins produced her only birth child, Michael Cornell Brookins, in 1950. Dorothy and Eugene were married until 1965.

In 1972, Dorothy married Arthur Smith and from this union she gained a son, John Phillip Smith. Dorothy and “Smitty”, as she would affectionately call him, loved to travel, entertain, and watch their Detroit Lions football. There was never a time when they were not ready to show people a good time. Dorothy and Smitty remained committed to their union until Smitty’s passing in 2016.

Dorothy was an active member of New Prospect Missionary Baptist church and was always willing to do what she could to support her church. She loved going to service and attended regularly until her health, and the unfortunate effects of the pandemic, caused her to slow her attendance.

Dorothy loved to cook and, many people would tell you, she kept one of the cleanest homes you would ever see. She was a joyful presence with her welcoming personality and keen sense of fashion.   If there was a party, you’d for sure see Dorothy “dressed to the nines”.  She loved her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren and great-nieces. Her great-grandchildren always looked forward to seeing their “GiGi”, at family events, birthdays, and holidays.

Dorothy was called home on November 17, 2022, in Clinton Township, MI at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Smitty; her son, Michael; her parents, and her siblings. She is survived by her stepson, John (Angela) Smith and their children; her granddaughter, Sonya (Andre) Buford; her great-grandchildren, Andre Jr., Olivia, and Aaron; her niece, Belinda (Theodore) Johnson; her nephew, James Mundy; and a host of relatives and friends.  Dorothy was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, and friend to everyone.  Her generous, kind, and warm spirit will be missed by all.
