Elvira Bernice Bulger, affectionately called (Bub) by her sons, lived a life of sacrifice and service to God, to her family and to her community. She was a very devoted and committed wife and mother. To say that she loved her children is an understatement, she lived vicariously through each one of them. Elvira had unwavering faith and was a beacon of love, strength, and wisdom to her family and all who knew her. She touched many lives through the unconditional love that she embodied. She was a tenacious prayer warrior who could get a prayer through. She was the matriarch of the family, and the glue that held the family together. She knew what to say, whether you liked it or not. She was like a therapist without a license, she always knew how to get you together - She said what she meant and meant what she said.

Elvira always shared words of encouragement and inspiration, given to her by God, with those she encountered. Her wisdom came from her belief in the Word of God and her many life experiences. Elvira never turned her back on anyone. She always fed people, and would give her last to family and friends, and anyone who graced her doorsteps. She was a diligent worker inside the home and out. Her smile and happiness, and peace were incredible- and her laugh was simply contagious! Elvira enjoyed life and living. She loved being in her kitchen, where she entertained guests, watched television, and cooked her famous meals, especially those holiday meals and desserts. She was a mother to many.

Elvira was born on December 12, 1931, in Abbeville, Alabama. She was the oldest of six children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Lillian Hogans. She and her siblings grew up on their parents’ farm, where she learned to cook and take care of her siblings. She was baptized at 12 years old at Rocky Mt. Baptist Church in Abbeville, AL. When she was 15 years old, Elvira’s family had a quartet group called the Amazing Stars. They traveled to various area churches singing in the quartet for 3 years. She graduated from the Henry County Training school in Abbeville in 1948. Upon graduating Elvira married Allen Earl Bulger, Sr., and shortly after her family moved to Panama City, Florida. To this union seven children were born. Elvira and Allen had their first two sons in Panama City, FL., before moving to Detroit, Michigan in 1956.

Elvira became a member of Metropolitan AME Zion Church upon arriving to Detroit. She raised all seven of her children in Metropolitan. She was actively involved in the church. She sang in the choir, ushered, and was the church’s nurse. Amazingly, Elvira managed to get all seven of her children prepared and ready to attend Sunday school and morning worship, every Sunday. She started preparing them on Saturday because she knew it was going to be a struggle getting them together on Sunday morning. Regardless of the hustle to get ready on Sunday mornings, her children loved going to church. Metropolitan was a place of solace for the family.

Elvira lived the life she preached about. She built a strong spiritual foundation for her family. Her greatest legacy is transferring the love of Jesus Christ to all her children, grandchildren, and so many others. She effected change in their lives. After her children were up in age, Elvira attended Lewis College of Business in Detroit, Michigan, where she received her Associates degree in Business. She would go on to work in the Detroit public school system, and the Detroit Renaissance Center for many years.

Elvira was called home to be with the Lord on November 16, 2021, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
