With enduring love and deep gratitude, we celebrate the life of Emile Joseph Duplessis, Jr., a devoted husband, treasured father, proud grandfather and man of unwavering faith.

Born on October 24, 1934, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Emile was the only son of Emile Duplessis, Sr. and Dolores Villere Duplessis. He moved to Detroit, Michigan at a young age with his mother and three sisters. Emile was deeply rooted in his Catholic faith, serving as an altar boy in his youth and carrying the principles of compassion and service throughout his life.

Emile graduated from Detroit Northern High School, enlisted and served honorably in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Alaska. Upon his discharge, he returned to Michigan and married the love of his life, Jean Lorraine Smith.

His heart belonged to Jean, and together they raised a beautiful family of five children. No summer was complete without a family road trip, each journey rich with laughter and adventure. Sunday meals featured not just good food, but spirited, competitive learning opportunities, where Emile encouraged curiosity, debate, and playful intellect around the dinner table. His love for his family was the compass that guided him, and he instilled in each of his children the values of love, learning, integrity, and perseverance.

Guided by a relentless curiosity and love for knowledge, Emile honed his business skills through evening college courses, demonstrating a personal and professional determination shaped by his entrepreneurial spirit. He began his management career in the grocery industry, then joined the Detroit Coca-Cola Bottling Company as a route salesman. His keen insight and strong work ethic propelled him into executive leadership roles with Coca-Cola over his 25-year career. Significant accomplishments included establishing a new division, Best Syrup and Equipment Company, and launching sales and marketing strategies that opened doors to new markets and positioned the company for success. He laid a foundation for innovation and growth and was deeply respected by his peers and colleagues.

In 2009, Emile answered a new call to serve, campaigning and being elected to the Oak Park City Council at age 75. His wisdom and principled leadership contributed to a more financially resilient and socially connected city, touching lives far beyond policy. He served as a Councilman for four years, cultivated enduring friendships and further enriched his community with grace and purpose.

Emile and Jean shared a passion for exploring the world together, from sun-drenched beaches to the spiritual splendor of the Vatican, museums
of Florence, and the vibrant energy of Moroccan markets. Yet no destination compared to visits with their grandchildren in Virginia, a place of immeasurable joy for them both. Emile loved spending time with all of his grandchildren, whether they were just a short drive away in Michigan or across state lines. He took delight in each visit, conversation, and shared smile, building bonds that spanned generations

Emile was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean Lorraine, his cherished daughter, Monica Ann Duplessis, and his dear sisters, Florine Anderson and Marlene Talley.

He is survived by his loving children:
• Cheryl (Hugh) Haithco Johnson
• Jacqueline (Frank) Duplessis Battle
• Jeannette (Melvin) Cloud
• Phillip Emile Duplessis

His adored grandchildren:
Danielle, Kristen, William (Pameris), Sydney, Melanie (Jordan), Marissa,
Cameron, Donovan, Kyle, and Mackenzi; each of whom held a special place
in his heart as their “Papa.”

He was also blessed to welcome and treasure his great-grandchildren; Karter, Stone, and Soul, who brought new light and joy into the family’s growing legacy.

His beloved sister, Veronica Cunningham, continues to carry forward his memory with grace and love.

He leaves behind fond memories of "Uncle Emile," held dear by many nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of extended family and friends whose lives were brightened by his kindness, wisdom, and warm presence.

Emile’s legacy is one of devotion, compassion, and love. He will be remembered deeply and missed greatly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. For those closest to him, his memory will live on, not only in their hearts, but in every playful tease and lovingly delivered one-liner. Emile’s signature wit was both charming and disarming, a quiet spark that brought laughter and light wherever he went. His spirit endures in every shared story, echoing joy, wisdom, and warmth.
