Life Story for
Melvin Keith Finch
Melvin Keith Finch was born March 7, 1941 in Williamson, West Virginia. He was born to the parentage of the late James Phipps and Frankie Finch.
Melvin lived in Williamson, WV during his childhood and attended Liberty High School. He participated in sports at Liberty and has been heard several times proudly exhorting how he scored the winning basket in a championship basketball game during his senior year. In 1966 Melvin moved to Detroit, Michigan.
Melvin was a member of “New Hope Missionary Baptist Church”, in Southfield, Michigan; where he dutifully served on the Senior Usher Board.
Melvin worked at several places during his life, but none more suited for his compassionate nature than when employed as a Peri-operative Assistant at “Henry Ford Hospital”, in Detroit, MI. It was while employed here on one occasion he performed CPR on a woman who was having trouble breathing and had no pulse. Once additional medical help arrived, he took the woman’s husband aside and began reassuring him, as he watched his wife being worked on. Another time, he rushed a woman to Labor & Delivery after hearing her call out for help as she was getting out of a cab. As a result of his selfless acts he was awarded the “Emery Ferguson Customer Service Award”. His humble demeanor was never more apparent than when he responded to receiving the award by saying, “We’re here to service patients. If there’s anything I can do to help, I don’t hesitate to do it”.
He was joined in holy matrimony with Helena Finch for 53 loving years.
Melvin could be found on any given day enjoying old western movies on the Western Channel, or posted up next to a grill in his backyard while his favorite music played in the background. He also was an avid lover of watching sports; basketball, football and boxing, just to name a few.
Melvin departed this life on Friday, October 16, 2015.
He leaves to cherish his fond memories: devoted wife Helena Finch; children Deidra D. Woods (Darrin), Denise D. Brown, Brian K. Finch, Karen E. Finch; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren (“Main Man” Bryce); one brother William F. Finch Sr. (Beverly); one special son Gerald Jones and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws and friends.
