Frank Newby was born on August 5, 1916 in Jones County, Georgia to Cuyler Newby and Ada Jessie Billingslea Newby. His father was a sharecropper in Georgia and a factory maintenance worker in Detroit. His mother taught school, worked in a cannery, and looked after her family of ten children.
Frank was a WWII army veteran and a longtime and faithful member of historic Second Baptist Church in Detroit. Because he was a POW held captive by the Italians, Frank returned home after the war fluent in the Italian language.
Frank was not one to sit. He was a General Motors employee, did landscaping work on the side, and exercised every day.
He is survived by sister, Lillian Porchia of Southfield, MI, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Deceased siblings include Willie James Newby, Mary Newby Moore, Cuyler Newby, Jr., Bernard E. Newby, Geraldine Newby Patterson; Alfred L. Newby, Ada Newby Cain, and Johnny V. Newby.
A devout Christian, Frank departed this life on March 7, 2023, after a brief illness. He was blessed to live a long and healthy life.
