Joseph was born August 15, 1985 in Detroit, Michigan to Yvette Gadson and Larry Jones. He was a student of the Detroit Public School system’s gifted and talented program receiving numerous awards and certificates of excellence throughout. He was a student at Baker College of Flint and an avid chess player for over 20 years. But his highest achievement was being a father to Autumn and Summer Gadson, his most cherished daughters. Today we celebrate the life of the fun, hilarious and loving father, son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend to so many.
As a child and through adulthood, Joseph loved playing chess. He became a chess master early on, taking pride in the many trophies he won over the years. He loved the game so much, he aspired to become a chess coach, teaching young, black children how to play. This was evidenced when he taught both Autumn and Summer how to compete and took pride in each of their chess wins.
Despite the many trophies he won at chess, he would say his greatest accomplishments were his daughters Autumn and Summer. He loved his girls fiercely and would challenge anyone who caused them grief. There are countless stories about him protecting his girls and going above and beyond to ensure they were always happy.
His protection of his daughters also extended to his mother and sisters as well. As a boy growing up around five sisters, he often got involved anytime someone said or did anything to his mom or one of his siblings. He was always there for the birthdays, parties and events with the family. Those events are where you saw the funny and joking Joseph. That’s the same guy his co-workers knew at Fiat Chrysler at the Warren Truck Assembly plant. Friends also describe him as a “cool dude” who loved to laugh and have fun. Everyone who knew him will remember him as one.
Joseph Nathan Gadson’s spirit transitioned on to be with the Lord on August 14, 2021 just one day shy of his 36th birthday. He succumbed to his battle with chronic stomach disease at his home in Detroit, MI. Despite the pain, he fought to the very last day to find a remedy to his illness. He was proceeded in death by his grandparents, Preston Gadson Sr. and Ruby Jones. He is survived by daughters Autumn and Summer Gadson; his mother Yvette; his father Larry Jones; grandmother Fannie Gadson; grandfather LC Sears; brother Larry Burnette; sisters Lawanda (Coby) Copeland, Sharita Gadson, Veronica Gadson, Tiffany Jones and Christina Jones; nephew Yusef Gadson; niece Maya Gadson; honorary baby sister Mariana Seymore; favorite auntie Pleshette Gadson; many uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of other relatives and longtime family friends.
