William achieved his education in the Detroit Public school system, graduated from North Eastern high with Detroit's notable Mayor Coleman A. Young, a classmate favorite. William joined the first black boys scout troop in 1935 created by Robert Brunette through Ebenezer AME church, which he remained a lifelong member. William later joined the US Army and served in World War II, and the Korean War. These experiences formed the groundwork for some of the most significant influences, he would have on the lives of others. Mr. Gary became Boy Scout Leader with University Troup 105 for forty plus years. Under the guidance of Mr. William Gary, numerous young men sought the rank of Eagle Scout with over 50 plus attaining the prestigious "Eagle Scout" rank and the award of "God and Country". To this loving union four children were born, Sheila Elaine, William Cyrus Jr., Michael Duane (preceded in death), Chinelo T.O. Azibo ( John Gary).
