Pearl Elizabeth Griffeth

October 26, 1936 — September 26, 2020

Pearl Elizabeth Griffeth was born October 26, 1936 in LaFollette, Tennessee to Frank Lee Young and Eliza Young, who preceded her in death. Pearl attended LaFollette Colored High School, in LaFollette, Tennessee. Pearl later moved to Detroit, Michigan, and in 1954 she united in marriage to Clyde Griffeth, who preceded her in death. To this union 5 children were born.

Pearl accepted Christ at an early age. In 1981, she joined Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of Rev. David E. Mitcham. In 2011 after relocating to Chicago, Illinois, she joined Mars Hill Baptist Church of Chicago, under leadership of the Pastor Clarence E. Stowers, Jr.

Pearl after raising her children, decided to fulfill her life-long dream to become a nurse.
She first attended the Urban Adult Education Institute to receive her GED in 1973. After getting her GED, she enrolled in Wayne County Community College, Associate Degree Nursing Program. Pearl at age 49, graduated in 1985 with an Associate Degree in Science (Nursing) and soon thereafter she took and passed the National State Boards of Nursing exam to become a licensed Registered Nurse. Pearl was hired as a Registered Nurse at the Detroit Receiving Hospital, in that same year. During her employment with the Detroit Medical Center, Pearl received certifications in areas of ICU and Medical-Surgical Nursing. She genuinely loved caring for each patient she had. In 2006 after caring for the sick for 21 years, Pearl decided to retire and relocate to Oak Park, Illinois to be closer to family.

Pearl acclimated to her new town, quite well. After a short stay in an apartment building, she decided to move to Oak Park Arms, a senior living community. There she met and made many friends, participated in all kinds of activities such as bingo, history classes, horticulture classes, bible study classes, communion services and Senior Prom an annual event. Pearl also met and made new friends at the Mars Hill Baptist Church of Chicago. She loved attending worship service every Sunday, to hear beautiful uplifting music and hear a life-changing message from Reverend, as she called him.

Everyone who met or became friends or acquaintances with Pearl Elizabeth Griffeth, instantly grew to love her because of her sweet and loving personality.

Pearl Elizabeth Griffeth made her transition Saturday evening September 26, 2020, to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; son, Clyde Jr; daughter, Dolores Workman-Jackson; one grandson, Tracey; one granddaughter, Tamika; five brothers, Richard, Arnold, George, James and Bill; five sisters, Sadie, Murdle, Helen, Thelma Jean, Virginia.

Pearl leaves to cherish her generous, sweet, unconditional loving memory: one sister, Maggie; three daughters, Barbara (John), Cathy and Beverly (Michael); two granddaughters, Sabrina (Kevin) and Adrienne; six grandsons, David (Derphine), Leon, Clyde, Edward, Andre and Eric; and a host of great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
