Obituary for
Annie L. Hendricks
Annie Laura Hendricks was born September 27, 1915 in Washington, Mississippi. She made her transition on May 24, 2012 at the age of ninety-six. She professed faith in Christ Jesus at an early age at St. Paul Baptist Church where her grandfather (Rev. Jake Johnson) and three uncles, who served as deacons, were members.
Annie met and married Frank Hendricks in Memphis, Tennessee. After moving to Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. Hendricks worked for Chrysler Corporation at the Mound Road Plant in Warren, Michigan. Most importantly, she joined The New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. James S. Williams Sr. She continued her membership under the leadership of Rev. James Newby III and the current pastor, Rev. Jimmie T. Wafer.
Mrs. Hendricks sang for many years in the renowned Pastor’s Chorus Choir, under the direction of Mr. Earl Poole. Her mother Mary V. Johnson sang in the Women’s Chorus while her daughter, Idella sang in the Youth Choir. Mrs. Hendricks was famous for her yearly fish fry to benefit the church. She also participated in the annual Calendar Tea, representing the month of September. She decorated the September table in a lavish fall motif and provided a cornucopia of culinary delights.
Mrs. Hendricks loved gardening, decorating her home, cooking, entertaining, attending baseball games and fishing. She was politically motivated participating in NAACP Freedom Rides and the March on Washington (DC) encouraging registration of African American voters. She was also very active in the United Auto Workers Union.
Mrs. Hendricks was a devoted Christian woman, believing and trusting in the goodness of the Lord. Her family and friends will miss her greatly.
