Obituary for
Cozy B. Hollaway III
Cozy Bryant Hollaway III, beloved son, brother, cousin, and friend passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015, at Henry Ford hospital in Detroit, Michigan after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. With his Family by his side Cozy passed on to be with the Lord at 7:16 PM.
Cozy Bryant was born July 27, 1952 to Hattie Bell and Cozy Douglas Hollaway Jr. Cozy grew up in Detroit, Michigan where he enjoyed a close relationship with his family and friends. Cozy developed a passion for art and was greatly influenced by another family artist, Donald Hollaway. After graduation from Cass Technical High School, Cozy attended Kentucky State University where he obtained a Degree of Bachelor of Arts, specializing in the Commercial Arts.
Cozy later moved to the Los Angeles area where he honed his commercial art skills working in the retail industry. Following the death of his mother in 1980, Cozy moved to Utah where he managed the display department at Mervyns department store, a division of the Target Corporation. After several years in Utah, Cozy moved to northern California for an advancement opportunity at a San Mateo Mervyns store and it was in San Mateo that Cozy learned he had Multiple Sclerosis. As the condition worsened, Cozy made the decision to return to Detroit and to the neighborhood he called home. With great mental strength and perseverance Cozy was able to continue working for the Target Corporation. With his love of artistry in mind Cozy moved into a home requiring significant repairs. Taking on this endeavor with all the cabinetry work needed was a trade well suited for Cozy’s artistic talents and he worked tirelessly to create the home he had always desired.
Coming back to his childhood neighborhood enabled Cozy to rekindle many of his yesteryear friendships and to reunite with many of his former high school classmates. When his health permitted Cozy enjoyed attending Detroit Unity Temple church where one of his former classmates, the Reverend Gregory Guice is the Pastor.
As close as Cozy was to family, he was also able to enjoy a close relationship with the neighbors of Underwood street, and as his condition continued to worsen, Cozy’s extended family and many neighborhood friends assisted with his care. During the waning years, most of Cozy’s care was provided by his loving brother Derrick and professional health care providers.
Cozy was preceded in death by his mother Hattie Hollaway and sister Kristal Hollaway. Cozy is survived by his father and step mother Cozy Douglas and Ruby; his brother and sister-in-law of Detroit – Derrick and Sheila Hollaway and their children, Derek, Bryant, and Jalon (son of Bryant); his brother and sister-in-law of Friendswood, TX – Kevin Douglas and Paula Jean and their children, Ryan and Aaron. He is also survived by Uncles Leon, Charles, Benjamin, and James Hollaway as well as aunts Doris Seay, Beulah Hollaway, and Carrie Hollaway. Cozy also leaves behind his close friends Dennis Arrington, Gregory Guice, William Hytower, Raymond Wright, and Angie Williams, along with a host of cousins from coast to coast, and a triangle of neighborhood friends of the Woods.
