Green Allen Hull arrived on December 14, 1957. The second son of five children born to James A. Hull, and Vera Lee Mayse of Cayce Mississippi, who preceded him in death.
Allen grew up in Memphis Tennessee, and graduated from Messick High School. When his mother relocated to Detroit with his siblings, Allen stayed in Memphis with his grandmother where he began working with his father in the glass business. In his early 20’s Allen moved to Detroit, the city that would be his home for the next 40 years, and continued his trade in Michigan, working as a Glazer for Hess Glass, then Modern Mirror & Glass. He took pride in his work and all that knew him knew he was the best at what he did. He worked his way up from apprentice to skilled journeyman before retiring after over 25 years of service in 2013. He was a member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, and the Michigan Glass Workers Local Union#357.
Allen met his wife Danita Joy Johnson in Detroit in 1994, they married in 2006, and remarried in 2020. He helped raise his stepson Justin, and welcome his first son Allen Jr. in 1998.
Allen, known as Big Al to his friends and family was respected for his quick wit, generosity, strength, and optimism. He never hesitated to help someone in need and was a mentor to many. His niece described him as her superhero.
He loved concerts, jazz, art, and traveling. He was a sharp dresser and the life of the party. His specialty was grilling ribs, and steaks in the backyard. He took his sons fishing and camping, and was a dedicated father who loved working with his hands. He could fix anything! He knew who he was, and what he wanted and didn’t have a problem letting others know... he was an authentic person. He loved to travel and visited Acapulco Mexico, the Bahamas, and Hawaii. He frequently visited with his wife and her family in Los Angeles, California. He enjoyed driving to Chicago and anywhere for a quick getaway.
He had a strong work ethic, and brought his son Steven into the Michigan Glass Union to work with him on the MGM Grand Casino where he was the foreman. He was always on the move, even when his health forced him to retire, he kept busy doing side jobs.
