Ivan Jerome Spencer was born on May 15, 1957 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the oldest of four children of Henry and the late Sybil Alicia Spencer. Ivan, along with his brothers and sister was raised in the Lutheran faith and was baptized at Nazareth Lutheran Church.
Ivan was educated in the Detroit Public Schools attending Angell Elementary, Hampton Junior High where his played the violin, and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1975. His favorite pastime in high school was hanging out in the auto mechanic shop class with his friends. He was a paperboy and worked at Reed's Hardware Store until graduation. He always liked tinkering around with nuts and bolts. When he was just a toddler, his mother would always tell the story of how Ivan somehow unscrewed some of the screws in his crib.
Shortly after graduation, Ivan enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for over ten years. He was stationed in Killeen, Texas and in the United Kingdom until his tour of duty ended. During his time in the Air Force, Ivan worked as an aircraft mechanic.
Ivan worked as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for nearly 30 years. It is where he met Brenda Duckett, whom he affectionately called "Duck" and her daughter, Tiffany. He and Brenda were married in March 1988. She preceded him in death in July 2023.
Ivan loved rock music, jazz, cartoons, reading mystery and suspense thriller novels written by Stephen King and Tom Clancy. He taught himself how to play the guitar. Ivan loved our Siamese cat, Snoopy. He used to walk Snoopy down the street on a leash. Snoopy was his best friend in the whole wide world. He was also a jack of all trades. He was a mortgage broker and did taxes with his dear friend, Donald Davis.
Ivan departed this life and entered his eternal resting place peacefully on January 13, 2024. He leaves to cherish his memories, his father Henry Spencer, brothers Darvin, Roderick, sister Alicia Spencer Koku, and nephew Ayodele Koku whom he loved very much, his buddy Donald, and a host of friends, and loving relatives.
