Jack Johnson

May 9, 1935 — October 27, 2025

Jack P. Johnson, a devoted husband, father, and friend, passed away surrounded by love. Born on May 9, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, Jack was one of thirteen children of Gordon Earl Johnson and Ruth Willamenia Herndon. He grew up in midtown Detroit, where he developed a strong sense of community, resilience, and pride in the city he always called home.

Jack graduated from Southeastern High School in 1953, where he was a proud member of the basketball team. His love for the game continued at Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina, where he played during his college years from 1954 to 1955. That lifelong passion for basketball never faded—there was never a March Madness season when the TV wasn't on, as Jack followed every game with enthusiasm and joy.

After returning to Detroit, he studied pre-law at the Detroit Institute of Technology. It was there he met a fellow student, Salina—who would become the love of his life. They married and built 57 years of partnership, laughter, and unwavering devotion.

Jack worked tirelessly to support his growing family, taking on numerous roles throughout his career. He drove cabs throughout Detroit, Highland Park, and Hamtramck—mastering every street and shortcut long before GPS. He later worked as a veterinary technician, a role that reflected his affection for animals, especially dogs. He eventually found his professional home in security at Chrysler, a position he took immense pride in, and from which he retired after nearly two decades of service.

Jack and Margaret raised two children of whom he was endlessly proud: Marita, whose work in social services reflects her lifelong commitment to helping others, and Jack, a photographer and filmmaker who he delighted in supporting his son — even starring as the lead in one of his early films. His natural charm and confidence made neighbors believe he must have once been a real jazz musician!

Jack adored his expansive family, including countless nieces and nephews who brought him joy and pride throughout his life. He was also deeply attached to the family dogs, Markie, Napoleon, and most recently Heidi and especially Hiro, his constant companion and best friend.

Family was at the center of Jack's heart. Whether attending concerts, going to the movies with Margaret, or gathering with loved ones, he cherished every moment together. His kindness, his humor, and his unwavering devotion to those he loved will be remembered always.

Jack leaves behind a legacy of resilience, tenderness, and deep love. His presence shaped his family in countless ways, and his memory will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known him.
