Obituary for
Douglas Jackson Jr.
Douglas Jackson Jr. was born to Douglas F. Jackson Sr. and Margaret E. (Bowen) Jackson Jones on March 29, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was raised in Detroit, Michigan by his mother and stepfather, Lee Jones, with his three step-siblings, two of which preceded him in death (Marlene Gingrich and William Jones).
Douglas accepted Christ at an early age. In 1959, he graduated from Northwestern High School, and soon after attended the University of Detroit. It was during this time when he decided to join the Catholic faith.
In 1960, he was joined in holy matrimony with his high school sweetheart and true love, Mary V. Ferrell (who preceded him in death). Together, they enjoyed 39 years of marital bliss, and to this union seven children were born.
Douglas retired after 34 years of service at the Chrysler Corporation where he worked on the assembly line and in quality control. He also dedicated his life to his faith by attending Sacred Heart Seminary, resulting in him being ordained a deacon in 1982 by the Archdiocese of Detroit. He faithfully served as a permanent deacon at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Martyrs of Uganda Catholic Church, St. Cecilia Church, and St. Charles Lwanga Parish.
Douglas volunteered his time and services throughout the years with various groups, including the United Automobile Workers, Boy Scouts of America, Church Choir, Parish Council and the Knights of Peter Claver. He was also an avid sports fan and player, and in particular enjoyed bowling and golf. It was while attending his bowling league when he befriended his close companion, Carrie Settle.
Douglas departed this life on Saturday, August 18, 2018. He leaves to cherish his memory: his seven children: Douglas Kamau Mu’min (Angela), John Glenn (Arletha), Lee Scott, Shaun Opeleta Jackson-Williams, Stephen Russell (Miriam), Holly Makeba and Jason Jabar (Sheila); one step-sister, Diana Gardner; his special nephew, Eric Ferrell; his close companion, Carrie Settle; fourteen grandchildren: Jessica, Chelsea, Jennifer, Shari, Leah, Jelani, April, Jada, Joshua, Jazmine, Julia, David, Donovan and Shabliss; eleven great-grandchildren: A’jah, Autumn, Aaron, Amiya, Brian, Braylon, Alayah, Ava, Jaden, Destiny and Journey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones.
