A master of strategy, with a spirit that couldn't be still. Yet, his true masterpiece, his heart's greatest treasure, was the time spent with family, a bond beyond measure. A servant of love, spreading kindness everywhere and touching the lives of everyone he encountered.
James Edward Hurst III, 47, of Lansing, MI, passed away on September 21, 2023, in Lansing. He was born on September 13, 1976, in Detroit, MI. James was a loving father, partner, son, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Growing up, James exhibited exceptional intellectual abilities and often pushed the limits of established rules and norms. He was innovative and creative which instilled an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. He was also very athletic and excelled in several sports including football, baseball, wrestling, and golf. James graduated from East Lansing High School, where he shined as a leader and athlete. He also attended Lansing Community College, Eastern Michigan University, and the Barber College of Lansing. His academic achievements showcased his intelligence and dedication to learning.
James was a licensed barber and the proud owner of The Hair Den, LLC. He was a true master at his craft, providing exceptional service and leaving a lasting impression on all who sat in his chair. He was known for his versatility and creativity, by cutting all types of hair and being able to provide any haircut asked of his customers. He took pride in his barbershop by creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for his customers and utilizing the best tools and resources in the field. He also dabbled in the mortgage business and had an entrepreneurial spirit that couldn't be tamed. James had a strong work ethic and was admired for his dedication and talent in his various endeavors.
Outside of work, James had a variety of hobbies that brought him joy. He was an avid hunter, starting at a young age with his father, and would often venture into the woods for hunting and fishing and to be surrounded by nature. When he wasn't conquering nature, he could be found on the golf course, perfecting his swing, or engaging in intense poker battles. Sports was another passion of his, and he never missed an opportunity to cheer on his favorite teams.
In addition to his successful career, James had a vibrant personality and a warm and caring spirit. He possessed a genuine love for life and a remarkable sense of humor that could brighten even the darkest of days. He had a deep appreciation for his family and friends, always making time to lend a helping hand or share a heartfelt conversation. He loved deeply, cherished his family, and was a supportive mentor to many.
James had a strong faith and was an active member of his community. He found solace and support in his places of worship. His strong faith guided him through every twist and turn, and he embraced life with a spirit that radiated love and joy.
James leaves behind a legacy that will be etched in the hearts of all who knew him. He is survived by Jolonda Bowers, the love of his life for over 20 years, and his children, James, Jada, Jeremy, Jamie (Gabe), Jaylah (Legend and King), and Jalen, who were his pride and joy. All of his children stand as a testament to his devotion and guidance, their lives forever touched by his unwavering love. James is also survived by his father, James Hurst Jr., his mother, Rochelle Hurst, his sister, Morgan Hurst, his brother, Evan Hurst, as well as his nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
James Edward Hurst III will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His warm smile, caring nature, and unwavering support will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. Though his physical presence may be gone, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us all.
