John Edward King was born February 25, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Dorothy King. He was one of five siblings. His sisters, Dorothy Shannon and Carolyn Butler, along with his brother Henry King preceded him in death.
Growing up, John attended King Solomon Baptist Church and at an early age dedicated his life to the Lord. He continued his fellowship throughout his life at Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church.
John was educated in the Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Northern High School in 1960. John was drafted into the United States Army in March of 1964. He served two years as a Private First Class and ended his time of service as a clerk in 1966. Shortly after returning to Detroit, John started working at General Motors. He worked as a millwright and later a painter until retiring in 1989.
John was a great man. He was consistently supportive of children, both his own and others. For those who knew him he was a shining light. When John entered the room, his presence was recognized immediately. John would start the celebration and then quietly disappear into the background. He was well known for his exquisite baked goods, including cookies, rolls and cakes, just to name a few. Everyone loved listening to his stories and riddles. He was affectionately known as “Uncle John.” John will be missed by so many.
In the early morning hours on Thursday, December 1, 2022, John was called home to be with the Lord. He leaves to cherish his loving memory, a wife Sandra, two children, April Royster, and Jason King, three grandchildren, Victoria Royster, Jarell King, and Xaviel King, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many, many friends.
