Ms. LaSandra “Sandra” Hickman was born on January 31, 1942, in Detroit,
Michigan to the late Kindas and Beulah Hickman (who were affectionately
known as Ken and Kate). Sandra was the oldest of nine children. During her
youth, Sandra was a stellar student! She enjoyed attending school and taking
various academic and enrichment classes. Her mother, Kate, would often tell
her, “Sandra, you are a professional student! You will be going to school
your whole life!”
Sandra graduated from Western International High School in Detroit,
Michigan. Sandra also attended Ferris State University where she obtained
her Master’s Degree in Education. She also earned an Advanced Graduate
Degree in Business Administration, coupled with a teaching certification with
a concentration in reading. As most would recall, Sandra was quick to share
just how “educated” she was in the midst of a heated debate!
Following Sandra’s educational journey as a student, she became a lifelong
teacher. Throughout her teaching career, Sandra taught students from
elementary school through college. She taught at various institutions
including Detroit Public Schools, Davenport University, Dorsey Business
School, Jordan College, and Wayne County Community College. Her kind
and giving demeanor provided a lasting impact on all those she taught and
encountered.
Early in life, Sandra met and married the late Starling Jones. During their
time together, they became parents to two beautiful children: Dawn Yvette
Jones and the late Craig Landon Jones.
Sandra was a faithful and dedicated member of Evangel Ministries where
she earned several certificates through various bible classes. She enjoyed
fellowshipping, learning, and serving with other members of the congregation
for over thirty years!
During Sandra’s leisure time, she enjoyed looking for treasures at local
garage sales and resale shops. She also enjoyed weekly visits to Sanders
Bakery to satisfy her never-ending sweet tooth! Sandra was a very caring,
loving, and giving person. Sandra was always willing to lend a helping hand
to anyone in need. She made everyone feel not just good, but important and
valued.
Sandra embodied the following quote from the late Dr. Maya Angelou:
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what
you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
She leaves to cherish, her daughter Dawn Jones of Livonia, MI; Two
grandsons, Dwan Wordlaw of Southfield, MI and Jovan (Ebony) Wordlaw of
Atlanta, GA; Three great-grandchildren, Tiana Young and Dwan Wordlaw
Jr. of Southfield, MI and Sebastian Wordlaw of Atlanta, GA. Sandra also
leaves to cherish five siblings: Hertha (Bill) Miller, Swanna Eubanks, Demond
(Carmen) Hickman, Melody (Steven) Moore, Parish (Lisa) Hickman. She also
leaves to cherish a host of family, friends, associates, and caregivers.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents Kindas and Beulah Hickman;
Son, Craig Jones; Sister, Sheila Morton; Brothers Wayne and Eric Hickman;
and grand-daughter-in-law Tiffany Young Wordlaw.
Sandra’s legacy will live on through her family, friends, former students, and
all those she impacted over the years!
