Obituary for
Lillie Mae Laws
Lillie Laws, age 80, made her transition to be with her Lord and Savior on March 30, 2012 at 12:21 a.m., with her family by her side.
She was born on July 11, 1931 in Altheimer, Arkansas to James and Annie Washington, Sr. Lillie attended elementary and junior high school in Altheimer, Arkansas. She received Christ at an early age at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She then went on to graduate from Merrill High School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Lillie graduated from Arkansas A & M University, currently the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, with an undergraduate degree in Education. She relocated to Detroit, Michigan and on August 24, 1957, Lillie was united in holy matrimony to Joe Laws at Warren Avenue Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. She continued on with her learning and received her Master’s degree in Education from Wayne State University.
Lillie’s career as a teacher spanned 40 years. She was employed as a Business Education teacher at Lewis College of Business where she became a member of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She also worked at Foch Jr. High School and eventually retired from Cerveny Middle School.
Lillie became a member of Word of Faith International Christian Center where she faithfully served as a member of the Comforters, Altar Guild, and Nursing Home Ministries. Lillie loved to shop and she traveled to such notable destinations as Ghana, West Africa; Bogota, Columbia; Israel, Germany, Hawaii, and Barbados. She will be especially remembered for her instruction, sense of purpose, and high expectations of success for her children and her students.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted husband Joe Nathan Laws, three daughters; Jovita Moffett (Anthony Moffett, Sr.) of Southfield, Michigan and Karyl and Lichelle Laws of Detroit, Michigan; and three grandchildren, Anthony Moffett, Jr. of Manhattan, New York; Marisa Moffett of Tallahassee, Florida; and Lamar Royal of Detroit, Michigan. She is survived by three sisters; Jamie Washington of Detroit, Michigan; Vivial Gladden (Frank Gladden) of Silver Spring, Maryland; and Miriam Adofo (Sam Adofo) of Bowie, Maryland; two brothers, Houston Washington (Marie) and Clifton Washington, Sr. (Ernestine) of Detroit, and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Lillie was preceded in death by parents James and Annie Washington, Sr., and brothers, James, Jr. and Ezell Washington.
