Harold Gregory Lowe

April 25, 1949 — April 27, 2021

Harold (Butch) Gregory Lowe was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 25, 1949, the second child born to the union of Harold J. and Betty J. Lowe. He attended Visitation Catholic School, graduating in 1967. Being very athletic and playing all sports, basketball was his favorite. He played basketball for hours, in the summer months,at the playground on Hamilton and Monterey, in Highland Park, where he made numerous friends. There are fond memories of him playing at Visitation and University of Detroit during his high school years. One such memory occurred, during the high school playoffs, where Butch shot the ball, at half court, from his knees, two points were made, and all pandemonium broke out in the gym. He was All Catholic, All City, All Metro, All State, and as his wife says,“all wonderful”. Butch received a full basketball scholarship, to the University of Toledo. He left the University of Toledo, for Shaw College Detroit, where he was a basketball star along with his play brother Russell Johnson. Butch didn’t stop playing basketball until he was in his sixties. He went on to coach, umpire, and referee the sports he loved. Finally, Butch was a golf enthusiast.

To his first marriage a daughter was born, Caprice Ann Lowe, who he adored. In 1976, he met the love of his life, Pamela Hammond. They were united in marriage in 1980 and would have been married 41 years on May 31st. They loved to go to Belle Isle spending time watching boats and listening to music. They shared a bond of love and just enjoyed being together.

Butch was the life of the party,he loved to dance, and have a good time. He had a wealth of knowledge, was a great trivia player, a history buff, and loved to read. He would go to Palmer Park daily to read the newspaper and do his crossword puzzles in ‘INK’ until his health began to decline. His knowledge for trivia was shown where a sports trivia radio station, that he called so often, with the correct answers, sent a letter asking him to take a break in calling.

Butch’s love for family was evident, he would have a monthly lunch date with Aunt Vivian, his favorite aunt. He looked forward to the family reunions at Belle Isle and would go out before the crack of dawn with a cousin to hold down the spot for the picnic. Additionally, he would always say the “Old Man”, his father, told him if something happens to me take care of your mother and sisters which he did to the best of his ability. He not only had a love for family but also a love for his friends with whom he would sit around talking and joking for hours.

His professional career started at J&L Steel. He then moved on to General Motors where he retired after 25 years as a Financial Accountant. While at General Motors, he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Detroit/Mercy in 1996. After his retirement he was the “Paper Throwin’ Man with the Astro Van”. Butch always had a rhyme for everyoneand everything. He was an undercover‘dapper rapper’.

On April 27, 2021, God called Harold from his labor to his reward. He leaves to cherish and celebrate his legacy:his loving wife Pamela, daughter Caprice (Cap), granddaughter Nyiesha (Jelly-Bean Roll), great-granddaughter Dallas, sisters Mary, Elizabeth, Rita (who preceded him in death), Celia,niece/sisterMaudena (Kevin), sisters-in-law Toni (Frank), Connie, Sandy, brothers-in-law David, Michael, nephews Craig, Derek, Steven, Chris, Michael, Joseph, Gregory, nieces Dana, Amanda, great-nephews Aarien and Isaiah, great-nieces Mariah (Travis) and Eleanor and a great-great niece Ariyanna and a host of other family members and friends.
