Life Story for
Nellie L. Macklin
Nellie Lillian Macklin died on March 28, 2016 at the age of 96. She was born in Detroit, Michigan to Lawrence and Ethel Macklin and was the sixth oldest of ten children. She graduated from Wayne State University (WSU) in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. In 1969, she received a Master of Arts Degree from WSU.
Ms. Macklin worked 41 years as a teacher for the Detroit Public Schools. She began her life's work at Balch Elementary where she taught Special Education. She retired in 1989 after teaching English at Cass Technical High School.
Ms. Macklin became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority while an undergraduate at WSU. She was an active member of the sorority's Detroit Alumnae Chapter and Wayne State's Alumni Association for many years. She was a member of St. John's Presbyterian Church where she attended regularly until she began to have health challenges.
She is survived by her sisters, Marion Martin and Ethel Craig, and a host of nephews and nieces. Her viewing will take place on Thursday, April 22, 2016 at James Cole Funeral Home, 2624 West Grand Blvd. from 3:00pm – 9:00pm. Her memorial service will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 1961 East Lafayette at 11:00am.
