Roy was born December 21, 1944 in Detroit Michigan to the late Carl Matthew
and Beatrice McNeely. Roy was the second of seven children. Carl Jr.,
Kenneth, and Christopher preceded him in heaven
Roy graduated in June 1962 from Southwestern High School after attending
Cass Tech, for two years. Upon graduation he worked at Wyandotte Chemical
Plant in Wyandotte, Mi. While working there, Roy played basketball in
Ecorse-River Rouge Basketball League. He was playing in that league when a
scout from Alpena CC offered him an opportunity to attend their school.
While playing at Alpena CC he became the leading scorer and second leading
rebounder for two years. Upon graduation in 1966 Roy received a scholarship
to attend Eastern Michigan University. In his junior year he was the second
leading scorer and rebounder. To this day he is in the top 50 rebounders in
Eastern Michigan history.
Doing his summers at EMU, Roy was hired by his future mentor, Mr. Hank
Hughes, to work with delinquent kids. Upon receiving his BA in Education in
1969, Roy accepted a teaching position at WJ Maxey Boys Training School.
After teaching, mentoring and counseling at risk youth for 27 years, Roy
retired in 1997.
Later in his basketball career, Roy was an intrigual player in the
International Masters Basketball Association (IMBA). During his many
season, he achieved numerous awards and accolades for his well-known
basketball skills. In 2007, he was awarded the Cal Dilworth Award for his
dedication and devotion in promoting the Masters Program. He also
received the Sportsman of the Year in May of 2010 which included a
championship ring. This year, Roy was inducted into the Masters Basketball
U.S.A. Hall of Fame Class of 2020. His achievements go on and on as
basketball was a true passion for him that he lived on and off the court.
Roy peacefully departed his earthy life on Thursday, February 6, 2020
surrounded by his loving family.
