Minnie Burrell

September 24, 1923 — April 28, 2025

Minnie Alice Hunter was born the youngest of nine children on September 24, 1923 in Palestine, TX to her parents Eddie and Mollie Hunter. Many years later Minnie moved to Detroit, MI where she married the love of her life Eddie Burrell and started their family in 1955. After several years of being a dedicated homemaker, Minnie joined the Detroit Board of Education where she joined the Special Education division, teaching and serving as Chief Steward of the teachers union up to her retirement in 2014. Minnie remained with the Board of Education over 40 years, while still managing her household, maintaining and cultivating relationships with peers, co-workers, family and friends.

Minnie served our community with passion as a dedicated member of the Eastern Stars organization and being elected as a delegate for the state of Michigan advocating for everyone to stay informed and involved with the political process by exercising our right to vote. Minnie lived life to the fullest, she stood on God’s word, she loved to travel, spend quality time with family and friends and she loved being an active member of her beloved Chapel Hill Baptist church.

Minnie was the matriarch of her family, her infectious laugh and wise and warm spirit will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings (Virginia Overton, Sarah Glen, John Henry, Tommy Hunter, James Hunter, Willie Hunter, Alvirta Barron and Edna Reed), her daughter Rhonda Rogers and her husband Eddie Burrell Sr. Her legacy lives on through her family left behind which includes five of her six children(Carol Burrell, Lorraine Burrell, Eddie Burrell Jr, Willie Burrell and Thornell Rogers), (13) grandchildren, (19) great-grandchildren, (2) great, great grandchildren and a host of nieces , nephews and friends.
