Obituary for James Hubert Moore

OBITUARY
James Hubert Moore, twin to John Herbert Moore was born in Selma Alabama, May 20, 1924. His parents, Ella Fuller Moore and Hamp Moore raised 14 children including three sets of twins. Twelve have preceded him in death. James is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years Gertrude Marie Moore, two devoted daughters Addie Morrow and Marvilyn “Delores”Cheek.

James attended the Alabama Lutheran Academy School that was the first Lutheran school for “colored children” in Selma, Alabama. This experience formed the foundation of his religious beliefs. He was baptized and became a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church where he served in various leadership roles including Emeritus Deacon of St. Phillip Lutheran Church in Detroit Michigan. James served two years in the United States Army Air Force where he received an honorable discharge and two medals for “Good Conduct” and “Highly Skilled Shooter.” After leaving the service and marrying the love of his life, Gertrude Edwards , he and she moved to Detroit, Michigan where he was employed by Chrysler. During his tenure of 30 years at Chrysler, he never missed a day off work until he retired at 50 years old. James attended the Slade Gregg Academy of Tailoring and became a certified accomplished tailor working part-time along with his job at Chrysler. He also attended Wayne State University where he earned certification that enabled him to receive a management role at Chrysler until his retirement.

James, was very creative and a nurturing soul who balanced his commitment to family, church, dancing, singing, and work. He loved square dancing. He and Gertrude square dance nationally and in Canada. They dance in the esteemed square dance group, Pardners All. James literally could “fix” anything. He had a gift for managing financial matters and used it to assure that his family was in his vernacular, “first class.” James often testified that his greatest lessons came from the Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer. These two were the basis of how he lived his life-- practicing strong ethics and honor as a devoted husband, loving father, active community leader, church member and employee.

James departed this life on June 23, 2015, while surrounded by daughters, Marvilyn Delores, Addie, and his wife Gertrude. He leaves to cherish his loving wife, Gertrude Marie Moore, two daughters, Marvilyn (Samuel) Cheek, Addie Morrow, sister Nettie Moore Richardson, grandchildren; Angela (Myron) Welch, James Deandre Morrow and David Emmanuel Cheek, a special heartfelt love for all of his nieces and nephews, his lifelong friend; Clarence Williams and a host of other relatives and friends.
