Mr. Thomas Oubre was born September 15, 1939 to George and Virginia Oubre in New Orleans, LA. in Charity Hospital. He is the sixth of seven children. He was preceded in glory by his parents, his sister Rayolga, his brothers James and Peter. Tom and his family were members of St Peter Cleaver in New Orleans, where he was baptized, made his first communion and was an alter boy. He was educated in New Orleans at Joseph A Craig and in Detroit at McMichael and he graduated from Northwestern High School Class of 1958. He attended Wayne State University where he studied business and obtained a boilers license.
While on a visit to New York Tom learned about the window business. In 1960, while hanging out with his friend Junior (who would become his brother in law) he met the love of his life, Darlene. They dated and eventually got married on December 26, 1968. To this union they had two boys, Marcus and Michael. They also adopted two of their nieces Laura (Chic) and Denise due to the untimely death of Darlene’s sister Beverly.
He began working for Weather King Windows and Doors in 1959. He worked there for 42 years, up until his retirement in 2001. In his time there he excelled in all aspects of the business. Tom was at the forefront of the home improvement revolution in Detroit. He was installing upgraded windows and doors all over the city long before the home improvement trends. Starting in the mid to late 1970’s until the early 2000’s when he slowed down. One of Tom’s famous quotes was“I can fix anything in the world except a broken heart” and he proved that to be true. He, along with his brother could truly fix anything.
Tom and his family were dedicated members of St. Theresa Parrish in Detroit, where he was also a member of the Knights of Peter Cleaver. He even became a Commander of the Jr. Knights of St. Peter Cleaver, where he was a great role model and influence over the young men in the organization. Many of them saw him as a second father. He was a valued member of the Parrish picnic committee also. When St. Theresa closed Tom and his family followed their Pastor Rev. Robert Morand to Our Lady of the Rosary, where he was also a dedicated member. He championed the project to have the chairs in the church reupholstered. He was Parrish counsel President for several years and was a member of the Men’s Club. At both parishes he was loved an adored by all. He was always willing to lend a hand to two of his favorite events: the adult foster care party and the Christmas food basket donations. He had a passion helping in the community.
Tom loved spending time with his family and friends. Him and his family spent many years camping and enjoying the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing with his brother, taking candid pictures and taking his family on short weekend trips. Being a son of the Crescent City, he loved Mardi Gras. He thoroughly enjoyed family reunions and joking around. He was well known for his incredible sense of humor and he would often play practical jokes on the children in the family. He had a huge heart and was willing to help anyone. He never met a stranger and he spoke to everyone. Another one of his famous quotes was, “itdoes not cost you anything to be nice to someone”.
Above all He LOVED his family and spending time with them! Some names that he went by were Tom, Honey, babe, Daddy, Poppi, Poppa,Tommy and Uncle Tom.
Tom was a dedicated Husband, father, brother, cousin and friend.
In transitioning into his next life, he leaves behind his loving wife of 52 years Darlene Oubre, Two sons: Marcus (Iris), Michael, nieces: Laura(chic) and Denise (Niecy) and Sullivan Major. Three grandsons Lorenzo, Michael (Little Mike) and Malik, Two great grandsons Lorenzo(Bebo) and Tayshon (Tater). His sisters Alice Brown, Patricia (Russell) Roberts and Rita Oubre. He is preceded in Glory by his Sister Rayolga, and Brothers James and Peter. He will be missed by his sister in lovesCharlotte White and Kim White, nieces, nephews, cousins and friendsand a Host of God Children.
