James Louis Patton
James Louis Patton was born in Detroit, Michigan to Maurice Patton and Henry Wilson. He graduated from Northeastern High School in Detroit, Michigan in 1954. James joined the US Army in 1955 and was honorably discharged as a Private First Class in 1957. James married Claudette Powell on December 24, 1957. Growing up in the "Black Bottom" section of Detroit always fueled a desire in him to succeed and better his life. James L. Patton was among the first African American students of Lewis Business College, where he earned an Associates Degree in Business Administration. James worked for a number of employers and engaged in many entrepreneurial endeavors. James made a career of his work with the Detroit Board of Education. He began as a custodian and retired in 1995 as the Superintendant over maintenance engineers at Detroit Public High Schools. James Patton received several accolades and certificates of merit for his work with the Board of Education.
James epitomized the phrase “people person” as he reached out to many and was richly rewarded with a host of friends. James developed a talent early in life to help and to teach life lessons. What brought him greatest joy of heart was his family. James was always influenced and impressed by his grandmother Hattie's deep spiritual connection and giving public testimony. As a result, James developed a family fondness for his church family at Third New Hope Baptist Church. His sense of style and zest for life will be missed by many.
James was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Patricia Patton, and grandson Justin Edward James Thompson. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children Kevelin (Barbara) Patton, Kirkland Patton, Pamela ( Ed ) Thompson, and Hattie (Marvin Sr) Jennings . Five grandchildren: Maurice, Tiffany, Marvin Jr., Milton III, Kennedy , five great-grandchildren . His beloved dog- LeLe. A host of relatives and friends.
