Nellie Mae King was born April 17, 1934 to Mr. Percy and Harriet King in Powellton, West Virginia.

She moved to Detroit in 1945 at the age of 11 and attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Miller High School.

Nellie married Namon Peterson, Jr. and to this union they raised Michael C. King.
