Obituary for John L. Pye

John Loren Pye was born June 20th 1981 in Detroit Michigan, the only son born to the union of Michael Lloyd Pye and Loretta Louise Stamper Pye. John accepted Christ at an early age and remained a faithful and devoted member of the Catholic Church throughout his life.

Born into a family of educators, John developed a love for learning at an early age. He was educated through the Detroit Public School System and attended Bates Academy and Renaissance High School. He was a national champion in Academic Games in middle and high school, receiving many trophies refining his love for mathematics. Following high school, John attended The Ohio State University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He also acquired two Master’s Degrees; one from Lawrence Technological University in Business Administration and another from Baker College in Education.

John served as an adjunct faculty member at Baker College where he was nominated by his students and received the “Adjunct Faculty of the Quarter” award. John also served as a 9th grade mathematics teacher at the Academy of Business and Technology High School. He fostered a love of mathematics in learners across all ages. John’s formal and informal teaching style incorporated math problems in games and everyday life situations.

John was a person who loved life, and lived it to the fullest. He had a uniquely dry sense of humor to keep you laughing, and always was up for a family game night or playing cards. Following in the legacy of the Pye men, he became a member of the Iota Psi chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, while attending The Ohio State University in 2001.

In memory of his late father, John served as president of the Michael Lloyd Pye Scholarship Foundation for 12 years. He headed the bowling committee as well as served on the golf committee, which raised money to award thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving students in the Metro-Detroit area.

John loved to dance and took up a passion for line dancing when he joined the Major Smooth Crew. With his MSC family, he traveled the country showing off his smooth dance moves, earning him the nickname “Get Low”. John was also an avid bowler and golfer. He could be found on the golf course or in a bowling alley sharpening his skills with his family and friends whenever time permitted.

John loved his family and cherished the time he spent with them. He was a good listener and many family members sought him for advice or a dependable shoulder to lean on. His good-natured spirit touched many people. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, teacher, and the epitome of a loyal friend.

John departed this earth on October 17,2015 and leaves to cherish is memory; his loving mother Loretta Pye, his sisters, Robyn Carroll (Trent) and Michele Pye, his two nieces who were dear to his heart; Ashley and Tori, his cousin “brothers” Selvan (Selvan Sterling) and Michael Manthiram (Sherie, Darion, Mikayla), godsisters Schannon, Akim (Parriesha, Sydni, Yeh‘oshua-Israel) and Wendi, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
