Sheryl A. Riggs

June 8, 1946 — December 24, 2019

Ms. Sheryl Anderson (Green) Riggs was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 8, 1946 and was the only
child born to the union of Russell and Beryl (Anderson) Green. She passed away on Tuesday,
December 24,2019 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio-Detroit Avenue, Toledo, OH.
Sheryl was united in Holy Matrimony to Gregory Allen Riggs, Sr. and to this union one son was born,
Gregory Allen Riggs, Jr.

Ms. Riggs was a lifelong Episcopalian, she is a third-generation member of st. Matthew's and st.
Joseph's Episcopal churches in Detroit, Michigan where she served on the vestry, and in many areas of
the church. She was currently a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Toledo, Ohio.

In 1969, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from Western Michigan University with a
minor in Latin. As a Social Worker for Wayne County Department of Social Services and Oakland
County Department of Social Services from 1976 - 1979, Ms. Riggs worked as a consultant social
worker for two nursing homes in the Detroit area, and The Episcopal Senior Citizens Center in Detroit,
Michigan.

Sheryl's community involvement which includes services for the poor, counseling those with special
needs, providing Geriatric services, and preparing for all aspects of death and dying, have always been
areas of comforting expertise for Ms. Riggs. Her passion for Social Work evolved into a zealous pursuit
for memorable funeral preparations and services. She enrolled in Mortuary Science at Wayne State
University in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1980. In the early 1980s,
Sheryl worked in the area of grief and bereavement and helped bring such information to the Black
community. She was one of the first to establish an aftercare program at her funeral home in Detroit
and brought that service to Dale-Riggs Funeral Home. Ms. Riggs became owner and operator of Riggs
Funeral Home in Detroit, Michigan from 1984 - 1987. Relocating to Toledo in 1992, she became
Manager and Managing Director of Dale-Riggs Funeral Home where she arranges and directs services
while overseeing all aspects of the business until her illness prevented her from being as active daily.

She maintains memberships with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Links, Girlfriends, Top Ladies of
Distinction, Northwest Ohio Funeral Directors Association where she served as past president, Ohio
Funeral Directors' Association, and National Funeral Directors' Association. Additional accreditations
include Certified Funeral Service Professional (CFSP), and Certified Preplanning (CP).

Sheryl was preceded in death by both her parents and grandparents.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory one son, Gregory Allen Riggs, Jr., who resides in West
Bloomfield, MI., cousins: Renee Ozburn of Williamston, MI., and Collette Floyd of Pasadena, CA, aunt
Bettina Chapman of Southfield, MI., many Godchildren and her Dale-Riggs Funeral Home family.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 4, 2020 from 11 :00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. followed by funeral service
12:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, 4800 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI., The Very Reverend
Scott Hunter, Dean officiant, The Reverend Gene Pearson, Assistant. Burial Woodmere Cemetery.
