Obituary for
Paul John Rybicki
Paul was born in Hamtramck on December 2, 1935, to Anne Hoppa and John Rybicki who instilled in him strong family values with respect for relationships, deep spirituality and a love of learning that guided him throughout his life.
Paul was educated at the Basilian Catholic Central High school in Detroit. In 1954 he joined the Basilian Fathers in Toronto, Ontario and studied at St. Michael's college where he earned a Bachelor of Theology degree. As a Basilian, Paul developed his passion for teaching combining his love of sacred scripture with his natural story telling ability. His beginning years of teaching were back at Catholic Central.
In 1969 Paul and Bob Holmes csb were invited by Fr. Ray Ellis to establish a home for young boys in St. Cecilia Parish in Detroit. For 13 years, embraced by the St. Cecilia community, they became a true family.
In 1975 Paul married Vicki Koivu and continued the group home ministry with Fr. Bob and their sons: Rodney Sr.; Christopher Smith; Charles Williams(deceased); Tracey Webb (deceased); Darryl Stubbs; Jorge Guerrara.
Paul went on to teach at St. Martin De Porres, Holy Redeemer and Assumption High schools, all the while continuing his ministry with the St. Cecilia Church community. During these years Paul was blessed by many "daughters" who adopted him as father: Denise Mahone Young, Stacey Hale, Diana Binkley, Kathleen Walker, Darlisa Rickman, Tameka Spencer and goddaughter Robbie Tilllie Ward.
For more than 40 summers Paul also ministered to the underserved at Columbus Boys' Camp in Ontario where he had a vital role in developing a "camp" community which lives today in the hearts and lives of those he touched.
Paul's mantra that "God is love" will be carried forward by his wife, Vicki, his foster sons, and his large extended family and friends.
