Sam Grady Johnson

June 15, 1939 — March 10, 2025

Detroit, Michigan

Sam Grady Johnson, born June 15, 1939, in Springfield, Tennessee, peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and devotion. Born to the late Curtis and Elizabeth Johnson, Grady was one of twelve children. In the mid-1960s, he was in search of better opportunities. Like many at the time, he migrated to Detroit, Michigan, alongside John Barbee, Ernest Gamble and his best friend, Thomas "PeeWee" Beard.

After a brief period with Ford Motor Company, Grady found his true calling in the construction industry, contributing to the growth of Detroit's skyline until his retirement in the early 2000s.

It was in Detroit that he met and married Cerneil Gardner, the love of his life. Together, they lovingly raised two sons, David Bernard Gardner and Grady Patrick-O'Neil Johnson.

When he wasn't working, Grady found joy in watching football and basketball games. To keep busy after retiring, Grady took a job as a security guard at New Prospect Church. Not only did it keep him active but he also gained a new community of friends. He also enjoyed listening to the sounds of The Mighty Clouds of Joy and the music of Motown, with The Temptations being his favorite group.

Grady's legacy lives on through his beloved wife, Cerneil, and their sons, Bernard and Patrick. He was a doting grandfather to David Allen, Catera (Troy) Barber, and Tamika Grant, and he warmly embraced Makaiya Robinson as his own granddaughter. He is survived by his siblings, Bessie Leavell and Rev. Delmus "Doc" (Jatanya) Johnson, as well as his cherished in-laws, Eddie Mae Dennis, Willie (Jeanette) Gardner, Jerry (Shirley) Gardner, and Linda Kaye Johnson.

Grady’s life touched the hearts of many, including a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Known for his unwavering dedication to his family and his kind spirit, Grady will always be remembered with love and affection. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
