Obituary for
Albert Simmons
Albert Simmons was born in Montgomery, Alabama on July 7, 1928 to Mary and Albert Simmons. He was the oldest of five children. Al, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was baptized at a young age. He belonged to the Hall Street Baptist Church in Montgomery prior to the family’s relocation to Detroit, Michigan when Al was around the age of five.
Al received his formal education through the Detroit Public School System. He graduated from Miller High School in 1946. Not long after graduation Al began his career at Ford Motor Company, where he was a valued employee until his retirement in 1984 after 34 years.
In his leisure time Al was an avid reader and loved to watch the History Channel and his favorite sports team, the Detroit Tigers. He also enjoyed traveling. Al was a quiet, generous, fun-loving man, who took pleasure in helping others and spending time with family and friends.
Al had two special relationships in his life from which his three children were born; his two daughters, Gloria and Evelyn (with the late Alberteen Sanders) and later his son, Alan, (with Johnnie Mae Browner).
Al was granted his angel wings on January 15, 2011. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends who he had touched throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Jackson, Robert and Theodore, and one granddaughter, Leondra. He leaves to cherish his memory a sister: Dorothy; three children: Gloria Jackson, Evelyn Malone (Jimmy) and Alan Simmons (Crystal); eight grandchildren: Kenneth, Nakia, George, Antoine, De’Marco, Bonita, Brianna and Brandon; 13 great grandchildren: his companion of 41 years, Johnnie Mae Browner and a host of relatives, family and friends.
