Obituary for
George Bush Stanton
George Bush Stanton was born on April 30,1922 in York, Alabama to the late
Charles H. Stanton and Lelar B. Stanton (Wilson). Times were hard and he was unable to attend elementary school consistently. Despite these obstacles, in 1942 George graduated from Dunbar High School in Bessemer, Alabama and he was the vice president of his graduating class. During his high school years, George and his older brother, Charles C. Stanton, were known for their basketball court success.
After graduation, George followed his father to Detroit, Michigan to find work. In 1942 he was hired at Ford Motor Company and retired in 1976 after 34 years as a skilled welder repairman. In July 1943, George was drafted and served in the army as a recorder of fire control in field artillery, European Theatre of Operations. While stationed in Germany, due to the harsh weather conditions, his feet were badly frostbitten which left him a Disabled American Veteran (DAV). After his honorable discharge from the Army, George began college in England, but longing for home decided to return to Detroit after one semester. As a lifelong learner, George loved history and read the newspaper daily. In 1946, George met the love of his life, Gloria Fayth DeMarr and they were married in 1948. To this union, two daughters were born, Patricia DeMarr and Carolyn Maytress. Sadly, Carolyn passed away at the age of 19 in 1973, leaving him and his family with a heavy heart.
George was an avid volunteer who cared about others. He was an active participant
in his southwest Detroit community where he was the Liddesdale Block Club President. George was also a member of Saints Andrew and Benedict Catholic Church where he was active in the Dads' Club and Legion of Mary. He was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts. In 1965, he became one of the first blacks in Michigan to be initiated into the Knights of Columbus and became a lifetime member. George also enjoyed fishing with friends, watching Detroit sports and discussing the merits of cars past and present. He had an "easy" smile and was a great conversationalist who enjoyed meeting people. If you had the pleasure of meeting him you immediately felt welcomed.
George always put his family first and was extremely kind and generous. He and
Gloria had a wonderful marriage, renewing their vows at Our Lady of Lourdes in River Rouge, Michigan to celebrate their twenty-fifth anniversary. George and Gloria loved traveling to visit friends and family and taking care of their young grandchildren. In the late 1980's, they joined Patricia (Douglas) and her family and became members of Sacred Heart Church. After George's beloved wife of 42 years passed in 1991, he moved in with his
daughter and her family. George was a faithful member of "The Group" at Sacred Heart Church and despite failing health, he attended mass whenever he could.
George departed this life on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at his home surrounded by his beloved daughter Patricia and his devoted son-in-law Douglas. He was 91 years old. In addition to his daughter and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles C. Stanton. He will be missed by all who love him: his daughter, Patricia(Douglas); brother, Elbert (Clarese) Stanton; grandchildren, Caryn, Ryan, Marc (Erika) and Adam (Alice); great-grandchildren, Samantha, Jayson and Douglas; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
