Shirley Ann Summers

July 4, 1936 — March 31, 2020

Shirley Summers was born July 4, 1936 in Lexington, Kentucky to the late Keller and Frances Moore.

Upon her family moving to Detroit, Shirley enrolled in the Detroit Public Schools. She learned to read at an early age and was double-promoted several times, thus graduating from Southeastern High School at the age of 16. She graduated Wayne State University with a Bachelor and Master Degrees in Education. While at Wayne State, she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Tau Chapter. An ardent lover of children, Shirley taught elementary education for the Detroit school system until she was promoted to Reading Specialist, Staff Coordinator, Assistant Principal and Principal. She retired as Principal of Greenfield Union Elementary School after 42 years of service.

Shirley married the late Boyd Jones and had daughter, Alicia. She later married Ronald Summers and remained with him until her transition on March 31, 2020.

Shirley loved music, singing, dancing and roller skating. The Arcadia Roller Rink was one of her favorite places. She studied piano and became the Staff Pianist for the United Christian Church and later for the Renaissance Christian Church. She was a member of Second Ebenezer Church. Cooking for family gatherings was also a joy for her. She was a member of Bathsheba Chapter No. 9 Order of Eastern Star.

Shirley leaves to celebrate her memory her husband of more than 50 years, Ronald, daughter, Alicia Jones-Coleman (Al), granddaughter, Joi, stepsons Duryea and Ronald, Jr. and numerous relatives and friends.
