Wernia Swint was born to the family of Leo and Anna Williams, of Detroit, Michigan, on June 27, 1926. She was joined by a little brother, Calvin, a year later in 1927. Wernia attended and graduated from Northwesern High School. After her high school graduation, Wernia furthered her education at Wayne State University. During this time, she found work at the Michigan Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. Wernia met Robert L. Swint and the two young people fell in love. They were married in 1952. The wedded couple were blessed with a daughter they named Susan in 1954. Their second child, a son, Lester, was born in 1957. Their family grew for a third time with the arrival of another son, Mark, in 1960. Wernia and Robert, "Bob" to his family and close friends, created a happy, loving home for their children. Their home was also a welcoming place for their extended family and the friends of their children as they grew.
Wernia took joy and pride in the life of her family and also enjoyed bookreading and collecting, especially in the genres of mystery, historical fiction and romance. The New Yorker Magazine was also a constant presense in her home, a source of enlightenment and amusement for her for many decades. For a long time, Wernia took joy in sewing and found pleasure in shopping, alone and with family and friends, notably Mr. and Mrs. Clyde and Linda Hopkins. Wernia was not really one for extravagance, even though her husband was one to spoil her on occasion. But one thing she did value was good conversation. While not one to call a person on the phone, she loved receiving phone calls and had few greater joys than spending an afternoon talking with loved ones, like her stepson, Robert Jr., her late sister in law Nonnie, wife of Robert's brother Marion Swint, but most especially, her beloved late cousin Barbara, wife of her cousin, Herbert Williams. Travel was something she also cherished whenever she had the opportunity. But Wernia found a special joy in family and church activities. She always found the humble everyday pursuits the most rewarding.
After 94 years of a kind, considerate life, Wernia passed away at home on the night of August 21, 2020, with her caretaker and youngest son, Mark, holding her hand. She leaves behind a loving husband, a daughter, two sons, a stepson, a grandson, Walter, a grandaughter in law, Sophia, a great granddaughter, Victoria, many grieving extended family members and friends touched by her good spirit.
