Obituary for Leola C. Thomas (Lurry )

THE OBITUARY

Leola Chonita Thomas affectionately known as “Nita”, was born April 26, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan to the union of John Henry and Annie Mae Lurry. Nita was educated in the Detroit Public School system, graduating from Northwestern High School in 1951. At an early age Nita dedicated her life to Christ and was baptized at Hartford Avenue Baptist Church by the late Reverend Charles A. Hill. Nita became a lifelong member of Hartford where she taught Sunday school and added her beautiful soprano voice to several choirs.

On March 31, 1957, Nita and Emmett Thomas were united in holy matrimony and through this loving union four children were born: Jennifer, Deborah, Kevin and Cynthia. Nita was a devoted wife and mother who tirelessly expressed her love and support to her family. Nita was a fixture at numerous football games, marching band competitions, graduations, concerts and other special events. Nita’s love extended beyond her husband and children to many others whom she “adopted” as her own. In the midst of her teenage years Nita assumed the role of “mother” in the upbringing of her baby brother Carl and that special bond continued throughout the years.

Nita not only worked in the home but also worked several years in the mortgage and real estate industries as an administrative assistant.

Nita enjoyed many years of traveling to places near and far including South Carolina, Hawaii, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Aruba, and many other Caribbean Islands. Some of her favorite pastimes were cross stitching, baking some of the best pound cakes and peach cobblers, and not to forget that wonderful turkey and dressing. Nita always looked forward to the sisterly cooking competitions during family holiday dinners.

Nita had a sense of humor and a sassy way about her that will surely be missed.

On Sunday, November 8, 2015, Nita let go of this mortal life and in exchange received a crown of righteousness. Her parents John Henry and Annie Mae Lurry preceded her in death as well as her sisters Dorothy Powell, Bernice Teamer and brother, Harold Lurry.

Nita leaves to cherish her memory: a loving husband Emmett, daughters Jennifer (William) Troy, Deborah and Cynthia Thomas; son Kevin (Kim) Thomas; brother Carl (Jackie) Lurry; brother-in-law William Teamer; grandchildren, Antonio (Tamika) Troy, Melany Troy, Kyle and Kira Thomas; along with many other nieces, nephews, cousins and an abundance of friends.
