Obituary for Alma Elizabeth Toval (Soulet)

Alma Elizabeth Soulet Toval was born on September 18, 1914 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the oldest of three children born to Walter and Stella (Sutherland) Soulet.

She was baptized and grew up in St. Katherine Parish, the first black Catholic parish in New Orleans. She attended New Orleans Public Schools – McDonogh #35 High School and Straight College (now Dillard University).

Alma met Henry Toval in Professor Chester’s Dramatic Club at St. Katherine’s. They married and became the parents of two children. During WWII the family migrated to Detroit, MI where Henry was employed by General Motors. Three more children were born to this union.

Alma was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She carried her New Orleans roots with her and was known for her “gumbos” and red beans and rice. When the grandchildren came along, she was lovingly referred to as “Mama Alma” and “Madee.”

Alma was a longtime active member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral Parish. In recent years she joined the parish of St. Augustine - St. Monica. When she could no longer attend, she looked forward to home visits and weekly communion. She instilled in her children a deep faith and love of God.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband Henry, her parents Walter and Stella, her siblings Evelyn and Walter, her son Melvin and her daughter Denise Nesbitt and her son-in-laws Kenneth Treece and Roland Wayne Scott and her grandson Kenneth Jr.
