Vanilla Marie Johnson

March 17, 1927 — January 4, 2025

Vanilla Marie Grayson (Johnson) was born March 17, 1927 to Holsey Grayson and Hilda Pope Grayson in Bashi Alabama; both parents preceeded her in death. 

Vanilla Marie was the fourth in a sibship of seven; Jessie Grayson (deceased), Eunice 'Yirgia' Grayson-Glass (deceased), Roosevelt Grayson, Annie Bell Grayson (Nickens) (deceased), Bedell Grayson (deceased)., and Hosie Mae Grayson Eckford (deceased). 

Vanilla Marie attended Detroit Public Schools'; McMichael and Northwestern High School. She then served at Henry Ford Hospital and Veterans Hospital as a certified Dietician Technician. Where she proudly worked at Veterans' Hospital until her retirement. In addition she was an active former member of the Ogeen Vashti Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Stars. 

Vanilla Marie loved to cook for her family and friends, hosting many gatherings that brought us all together for sweets, savories and smiles. At a mature age she began to participate in 'Hot Yoga' and walking as an exercise. She was an active volunteer in the community for years, contributing to the Meals on Wheels and Focus Hope programs. She attended Renaissance Unity Church of Royal Oak, where she proudly performed her duties as a Greeter. 

Vanilla Marie met and married Willie Frank Johnson in 1964. She was the mother of six (6) children; Cornell Grayson, (deceased) Curtis Edwards (deceased), Gail Grayson, Willie "Billy" Johnson (deceased), Vicki Johnson, and Tara Johnson (deceased). 

Vanilla Marie leaves to cherish her memory two children; Gail Grayson (john Cooper - ­deceased), and Vicki Johnson Daniels (Frederick Daniels), ten (10) grandchildren, twenty-­seven (27) great grandchildren, a host of great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. 

Vanilla Marie Johnson had an amazing life of 97 and 3/4 years, she will be loved, cherished and her memory will live forever in all the hearts that she touched. May the cherished memories of Vanilla Marie bring comfort to those who mourn and may her spirit find peace in the hearts of those who loved her.
