Wykina Takiya Yvonne Blue - “Candy”
Wykina Takiya Yvonne Blue was born February 23, 1977 in Detroit, MI to Quincy C. Blue, Sr. and Priscilla (Jackson) Blue. She was affectionately known as "Candy" to her immediate family.
Wykina entered this world the last child of ten children, a beautiful baby girl with a head full of curly hair, big dimples and an infectious smile and laugh that won’t be forgotten.
Wykina dedicated her life to Christ at a young age. She attended Edison Elementary, Murphy Middle and finally Redford High School all in Detroit, MI. She graduated and earned her high school diploma from Redford in 1995. She found an artistic outlet while working as a display merchandiser for companies like Sears and Crabtree & Evelyn.
In late 2007, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. By March 2008 she slapped cancer in the face at a “Save the Ta-Tas and Shaving of the Head” party laughing through it all with friends and family into remission. She said, “I know who I am, it’s just hair”.
Wykina later attended Schoolcraft Community College where she was on the Dean’s list. She received an Associate Degree in Applied Science, Marketing and Applied Management in May 2012. Most of her signed artistic creations can be found with family, friends, and individuals who purchased pieces of her work at various arts and crafts shows.
Wykina loved her job and most recent role as an Administrative Assistant for Detroit Cooperative Church (Pastor Matthew Bode). This role also allowed her to express her creative talents by creating a website and weekly programs for the church.
Her favorite past times was staying home, painting, creating new art pieces and enjoying time with her three cats, Abbey, Rosco and Simon. Four of her brothers preceded her in death by: Baby Ronnie (Stillborn 1957), Terry Blue (1993), Ricky Blue (2004) and Quinn Blue (2020). Also proceeding her in death was a special church friend, Rev. Paul F. Gateman, and her beloved cat Tommy (2020).
“Candy” always kept it “Real” with people whether they liked it or not. She was a fighter who was extremely happy and positive over the last few years as the cancer returned. She passed away quietly at home (which was her place of refuge) on April 26, 2022.
She leaves behind, her mother and father both of Detroit, MI; four sisters: Gloria Blue (…), Brenda A. Beal (David) of GA, Caroline Blue and Katina Blue of MI; one brother: Dennis Blue of MI; one maternal uncle: Lee Curtis Jackson of MI; three nephews, four nieces, great nephews and nieces, and a host of cousins, and friends. Two special friends: Eric Wright, and Jennifer Anton.
Wykina’s wishes were to have a happy private gathering amongst family. A private memorial service will be organized for a later date.
